This qualification is for people with some experience in the dairy farming sector of the agriculture industry. On completion of this qualification people will be able to work under little or no supervision.
This qualification recognises the specialised and seasonal nature of modern dairy farming, and people will be able to gain the skills and knowledge to specialise in milk production.
The compulsory section includes the skills related to treatment of milking problems in dairy cattle; milking isolating milk, and cleaning in and around the farm dairy, handling and moving livestock, and injury prevention in a rural workplace. This section also includes knowledge of how cows milk, operation and maintenance of farm dairy equipment, and milking machine components and cleaning procedures.
The elective section recognises the variations amongst dairy farms in the use of agricultural vehicles such as motorcycles, All Terrain Vehicle Utilities (ATVUs), and All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), and allows people to select a standard relevant to their own farming situation.
This qualification builds on the knowledge and skills in the National Certificate in Agriculture (Level 2) with strands in Cattle Farming, Dairy Farming, Deer Farming, and Sheep Farming [Ref: 1434].
This qualification has a link with the following qualifications as an overall package of seasonal farm skills:
. National Certificate in Agriculture (Animal Feeding and Pastures) (Level 3) [Ref: 1435];
. National Certificate in Agriculture (Cattle Breeding) (Level 3) with strands in Beef Cattle Farming, and Dairy Cattle Farming [Ref: 1436];
. National Certificate in Dairy Farming (Animal Health and Husbandry) (Level 3) [Ref: 1441].
This qualification may be completed concurrently or individually as seasonal activities occur on the dairy farm, and depending on the degree of specialisation of the dairy farm.
This qualification also shares some unit standards with the National Certificate in On-farm Milk Quality (Milk Harvester) [Ref: 1350] which focuses on milk quality when milking cows; however, this qualification goes beyond the requirements of the National Certificate in On-farm Milk Quality (Milk Harvester) as it is designed for those people who are involved with activities outside the farm dairy such as animal handling, and are required to have knowledge of work place safety.
On completion of this qualification people can progress to one or more of the Level 4 dairy farming qualifications.
